The Rise And Fall Of Poverty Porn
Alex’s YouTube clip is a case study in a dramatic shift in the way nonprofits represent themselves and their constituencies in an era of social media and information overload. From the ashes of poverty porn, a new era of media—one which shows the poor as fundamentally full of potential and opportunity—is being born.

Months after one of the largest earthquakes in history hit the small island country of Haiti, recovery is slow and aid is still desperately needed. Back in January, I listed several of the vintage items in my shop as “HAITI RELIEF” purchases — 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these items would be donated to Yélé Haiti. Some three months later, I sold the first two items this week! It’s incredible! I’m not sure how to explain the fluke, but I’m sincerely grateful for the charity and I’m happy for the help in helping those in dire need. There are still a few items left for purchase:
Asymmetric Color Block Woven Clutch, $30
Strapless Sweetheart Floral Party Dress, $40
Olive & Bark Snake Skin Peep Toe Pump, $50
Carmel & Chocolate Stripe Woven Clutch, $35Look good while helping others. Visit www.bellemichou.etsy.com to make your contribution!
hey new followers: if you didn’t know, i have an online clothing shop. now you know! go take a look… right now!
Where I’ll be tonight. An organizer from this event asked to use the photos I took during my trip to Haiti in 2008. I’m excited to share them with people; to show that beyond the poverty and corrupt government, there is so much beauty in the country. Go to my Flickr to see all the images.
I recently taught a dance class as part of Broadway Dance Center’s Dance Haiti guest class series benefiting the relief efforts in Haiti. The studio raised over $2,500 after just one week of classes and aims to raise a total of $10,000 which will be donated to the Red Cross.
I’ll be teaching another open level Modern dance class this Thursday, February 4 at 9p. The class price is $18 and 100% of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. The dancers and I had an incredible time dancing to Fela, Me’shell, Haitian folk songs, and whatever else my shuffle could come up with. I’m looking forward to enjoying another wonderful evening. Join us as we dance for the cause!

Tonight, January 16 at 8:30p, I’ll be teaching an open level Modern dance class at Broadway Dance Center to benefit the victims of this week’s earthquake in Haiti. As many of you know, our family in the States is waiting to hear good news about our relatives in Port-au-Prince. This is very important to me and I hope that you all can come out to support the effort! 100% of the proceeds from this class will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

Doctors Without Borders teams, who were already working on ongoing medical projects in Haiti, are seeing significant damage to our medical facilities after the earthquake struck, injuries to patients and staff, and an influx of wounded men, women, and children in need of care.
MSF aid workers have set up emergency clinics, some in tents, to replace our own damaged medical centers and have treated more than 800 injured people so far.
Right now, our teams are working to ensure the safety and continued care of patients admitted to our hospitals and clinics throughout the city. We are currently transporting additional staff and emergency supplies into Haiti, opening a 100 bed hospital, and constructing an inflatable surgical unit consisting of 2 operating theaters and 7 hospitalization tents.
Please help us provide urgently needed support to our emergency response and ongoing emergency medical work in Haiti.
