i just caught this piece at bam last week and while i thought the show as a whole was incredibly tedious to watch (intentionally, maybe) and the music was annoying (kitschy remakes of space and western movie soundtracks), i LOVED the set and the lighting, but especially the lighting! there were moments when the entire stage was transformed into the view finder of a vintage camera. the whole piece reminded me of the famous footage of moon landing. i was very inspired by that.

Dance companies are supposed to be shrinking, not starting up in these recessionary times. Not so at the Dance Theater of Harlem, which closed its company in 2004. Theater officials on Wednesday announced the start of auditions to create a new stripped down troupe of 18 dancers, which will begin rehearsing in August and touring in October and aims to return to a New York stage by April 2013.

more.

I am very much looking forward to this! I’ve only ever seen the company on video. This will be so great!

a very well written argument for the unionization of professional dancers, often the lowest paid and least respected people in a production. it’s insane, when i compare the compensation and worker rights laws for performing artists overseas, i wonder why i even bother trying to make it here.

allison schulnik’s mound at the zeihirsmith gallery in nyc. you might recognize her work from the music video for grizzly bear’s ready able. i love her work! skip to the 2:45 mark to watch my favorite part of this video. reminds me of pina bausch’s movement. so clear and pretty.
