i finished work early today… very early. i ended up spending the rest of the morning and a good chunk of the afternoon wandering through moma and making good use of my membership (explaining the flurry of art posts earlier).
it dawned on me several times today how lucky i am to call this city home. all the art i saw for (essentially) nothing, the diversity of culture, the huge variety of food…...

A short story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
I lay in an uncomfortable position, my head at a strange angle so that it stayed on Victor’s shoulder and my body curving back so that it tucked into him. He was sleeping, his breathing as even, as unhurried, as everything else about him. In contrast my thoughts churned, though I didn’t allow myself to think about my lost virginity. He had looked faintly surprised, probably because I had offered...

hey! thanks so much for your encouraging words. that’s very nice of you and i appreciate your reply. i guess i’m just in a funk. i’ll shake it off soon. but i really can’t help feeling like i can see the trajectory of my life and it looks nothing like i pictured it. shoot, my life at this very moment is nothing like i imagined or wished for. at. all.
and yea, side jobs....

i’m feeling a bit pooped and a tad bit defeated this morning.
i’m beginning to come to terms with the fact that i may never achieve my professional dreams in the way that i’ve always envisioned them. that they may be too big for my little hands to grasp and that i, in fact, don’t have to chutzpah to make them my reality. lately, i’ve not been terribly motivated or...

collina strada novella bag
collina strada novella bag i’ve been eying this lovely bag for a minute now. it’s so fly! it’s also a perfect example of how ridiculous urban outfitters’ markup practice is. the bag originally retailed on the site for $358. it is now on sale for less than a third of that at $99!
unbelievable.

recipe: pikliz (spicy haitian slaw)
as requested by fellow kreyol tumblr, zami, here is a recipe for pikliz (a spicy slaw) to accompany the banan peze recipe i posted last night. equally as easy to make as the fried plantains, pikliz offers a cool then fiery flavor and light crispness that works wonderfully as a relish or side-dish. it’s like a spicy sauerkraut. enjoy!
ingredients:
about a half head of green cabbage,...

recipe: banan peze (twice-fried green plantain)
(twice-fried green plantains)
fried plantains are quite easily my third favorite part of our annual feast (after the stuffing and the baked mac + cheese, of course). whether served with haitian guacamole or with picklies (a spicy slaw), i just love the crispy, chewy goodness of these little treats and the flood of childhood memories that come with them. they’re super easy to make and very...
